Edgar Allan Poe e a Problemática Natureza do Realismo

Resumo

Tomando como referências os pontos de vista do crítico e tradutor literário brasileiro Oscar Mendes, do crítico literário e acadêmico inglês John Rignall, do filósofo alemão Walter Benjamin e o do poeta francês Charles Baudelaire, é possível afirmar que, mais do que um simples conto, “O homem das multidões”, do poeta estadunidense Edgar Allan Poe, pode ser efetivamente encarado como um texto híbrido que, sob forma de ficção, mescla uma narrativa ficcional com a reflexão, com a discussão acerca da ‘problemática natureza do realismo’. Tal discussão aponta não só os parâmetros que regem a própria literatura chamada realista, como também para os limites subjacentes a esse gênero literário. 

ABSTRACT
Based on the viewpoints of Brazilian literary critic and translator Oscar Mendes, English literary critic and scholar John Rignall, German philosopher Walter Benjamin, and French poet Charles Baudelaire, it is possible to assert that American poet Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Man of the Crowd”, more than a mere short story, may in effect be understood as a hybrid text that blends a fictional narrative with the reflection, with the discussion on the ‘problematic nature of realism’. Such discussion points not only to the parameters that rule the very so-called realist literature but also to the underlying limits inherent to this particular literary genre.
